CRC Health Equity Grants: Niola Cancer Care Foundation
Niola Cancer Care Foundation (NCCF) is a non-profit organization based in Lagos State Nigeria and dedicated to promoting colorectal cancer awareness, screening, and access to medical treatments. Through their annual health educational event, Ijoya, and media campaigns on television, radio, social media, and newpapers, NCCF is increasing awareness, providing free and subsidized colorectal cancer screening, and engaging their community. NCCF also provides patient navigation services, health supplies for colorectal cancer patients, like ostomy bags and disposable gloves, and palliative end-of-life care and support to families.
NCCF received a GCCA CRC Health Equity Grant to support Ijoya, their annual health educational event that uses dance, exercise, wellness talks, free screening, and a local organic food exhibition to create awareness of colorectal cancer and encourage healthy living and lifestyle. At the Ijoya event, NCCF provided 200 free FOBT screening tests. In the event of a positive screening, NCCF was able to financially subsidize follow-up investigation through colonoscopy. Participants in the Ijoya event also learned about colorectal cancer, its risk factors, and ways they can reduce their risk through exercise and healthy diet.
“One key strategy to saving lives from the scourge of colorectal cancer is efficient collaboration at the local, national and international levels,” said Eniola Omoro Akintunde, Founder and Executive Director of Niola Cancer Care Foundation. “Our partnership and collaboration with GCCA was a game changer in sensitizing and testing Nigerians on colorectal cancer. Together we can beat colon cancer.”
